Types of EV chargers

  • Level 1: A Basic Start

    Level 1 chargers are the most basic option and come standard with most electric vehicles. They plug directly into a household outlet (110-120 volts) using a standard three-prong plug.

    While convenient and easy to use, Level 1 chargers are best suited for hybrid vehicles or light EV use due to their slower charging speed. For example, fully charging an EV with 300 km (186 miles) of range can take approximately 45-55 hours, delivering around 6-8 km (4- 5 miles) of range per hour.

  • Level 2: The Recommended Choice

    Level 2 chargers are faster and more efficient, requiring a 240-volt circuit for installation. These chargers can be hardwired into your home's electrical system or used with a portable setup connected to a 240-volt outlet.

    A Level 2 charger can fully recharge an EV in 3-8 hours, making it ideal for daily use. For hybrid vehicles, the recharge time is even shorter-often just a couple of hours. With a Level 2 charger, you get the convenience of overnight charging with plenty of range for the day ahead.

  • Level 3: Commercial Fast Charging

    Level 3 chargers, also known as DC fast chargers, are primarily found in
    commercial or public charging stations. They deliver rapid charging speeds, bringing an EV from 0% to 80% in as little as 30 minutes.

    However, Level 3 chargers are not typically available for residential use due to their high cost and the significant power requirements. These chargers are best suited for public spaces or fleet operations.
